22/11 – WSB walk to Chesterfield in aid of BCDP

We had a meeting* last  night and sorted** out our walk to Chesterfield. So, the plan is:

  • 3.30am (FFS) set off from Oakwell where we then head up to Birdwell, High Green, Hillsborough, Sheffield City Centre (fry up and a couple of beers) then through Dronfield before ending up in Chesterfield round about 1/2 o’clock. The route is here

  • WSB will be covering the cost of the coach home, however, we need numbers and a £10 refundable deposit if you fancy it.
  • All profits will go to Barnsley Churches Drug Project. Here’s a quick summary of what they do

Barnsley Churches Drop-in Project is a local charity which provides meals to the homeless and impoverished in Barnsley. We open 3 times a week and serve hot food and drinks, and provide sandwiches, warm clothing and toiletries to our clients. Our numbers have increased substantially over the last few years and we are regularly seeing 100 people in one session. The people we see often have drug or alcohol problems, but many don’t. We see young families struggling to make ends meet because of welfare changes, sanctions, break ups or other reasons. And older people fearful for the future and choosing whether to eat or heat.

We are opening again this year on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.  £500 would really make our Christmas.  We like to buy presents for people attending and for those attending Boxing Day. Just a little something such as hats, gloves, scarves, socks, toiletries. Basic gifts usually cost around £400.  Sadly this year funding has been a struggle and we haven’t allocated any funds to gifts. The food itself for Christmas Lunch would cost around £60 -£80, it would be wonderful to have crackers on the table, and make this a lovely Christmas at the project.

With regards to a larger amount it would be great for us to have money set aside for sleeping bags. As the weather turns cold, rough sleepers have nowhere other than the project to turn to and we are completely out of sleeping bags. Throughout Winter in particular we cannot meet the demands of people asking if we can help with a sleeping bag or blanket. We rely on donations and they are few and far between. There are many running costs to the project, food stocks and a new fridge would also be a blessing to us.’

The money that we raise will go towards their Christmas programme where they do the above but also provide a Christmas Dinner and those that need it some comfort, support and companionship at the ‘most wonderful time of the year’.

If you’re in, email Deposits must be in by end of October to reserve a spot. You can also donate below or download the sponsor form here, too.

Nailed on it snows. And rains. And we lose. Can’t wait.
